Situated on a north facing hill overlooking lush farmland just past the Weir wall of Glenmaggie Weir you will find Blue Gables Winery. Blue Gables Winery is the home of Catherine and Alistair Hicks. Utilising “The Hill”, a piece of infertile land that Catherine’s father, a dairy farmer of over 40 years could not irrigate, is now a beautifully established Vineyard and Winery.
Blue Gables has been a topic of conversation amongst my friends for the past few years about what a great day out they had with the kids, what delicious pizza they enjoyed, and the beautiful surrounding they were in and not to mention the wine. With all this talk I just had to go and see what all the fuss was about, needless to say I was not disappointed.
One recent sunny Sunday afternoon with my family in tow, we took the picturesque drive to Blue Gables Winery to meet with friends for a long overdue catch up.
We were pleasantly surprised on arrival just how beautiful this place was. The setting a gorgeous farmhouse which the vineyard was name after, a beautiful stylish Cellar Door and of course beautiful outdoor dining area overlooking stunning views that my friends have been talking about. I was amazed at how much space there was for the children to run around and a playground as well.
With the children playing with their friends and us sitting on the long tables what more was there to do but start sampling all that Blue Gables have to offer. Starting with a glass or two of the Shiraz and an order of Antipasto Platter we set ourselves in for a fantastic afternoon. As the afternoon rolled on we had filled ourselves with tasty woodfired pizza of all toppings, wood fired wedges and maybe a few Sauv Blancs as well. The highlight for the kids was the dessert Pizza with marshmallow and chocolate topped with ice cream.
We were very pleasantly surprised to see that on a Sunday afternoon they also have live entertainment by various local musicians. We were lucky enough to be entertained by Lee Thomas. Lee’s music and voice in the background helped to enhance what was already the perfect setting. Lee will be playing every Sunday over January and also ??????. There is now a free bus running from Sale every Sunday between at 1pm and departs from the winery at 5pm. For Sunday lunch bookings are essential.
Catherine and Alistair have definitely utilised “The Hill” to its best potential, and I have only scraped the surface of what Blue Gables has to offer. There are award winning wines to taste at the cellar door and Maffra Cheese platters that I still have to sample and I know that I will definitely be visiting again to do so.
