Summer of Soul 2017 has a line-up intent on celebrating all of the reasons we count down to this time of the year.
From the USA, on a short Australian tour, don’t miss your chance to experience the warm, soulful pop grooves of one of the best live bands on the planet: Lake Street Dive. The Cat Empire charismatic frontman, Felix Riebl, is performing with his band Paper Doors. Reibl has sung, danced, hollered, shouted, sweated and danced from hundreds of stages, in scores of countries; it will be hard to take your eyes off him! And African guitar giant, Vieux Farka Toure, often referred to as The Hendrix of the Sahara, will mesmerize us all.
Experience the sound of cruise control, dive bars, strobe lights and tape decks with the band GL. Cruising on glowing synths, gritty drum-machines, and the stratospheric vocals of lead vocalist Ella Thompson.
Soul crooner Simon Burke and his band The Meltdown is a band known for horn heavy dance floor cuts and majestic down-tempo country soul, evoking big skies and long open roads. The Sugarcanes are Melbourne’s most revered Rock n Soul quintet. If you like bands like Alabama Shakes, then this band’s for you. The bands keen attention to those old soul sounds that, with the help of Lucy’s powerful vocals, are transformed into a modern rock ‘n’ roll take on the classic heartbroken genre.
A band boasting an elegant line in sweet soul, ‘The Do Yo Thangs’ – a 7-piece outfit that feature lush vocal harmonies, nasty beats and straight up killah tunes. Like a summer festival in a band the sunshiny, super smooth harmonising and hell tight rhythm section make for good times and complement the formidable vocal power house that is lead singer Audrey Boyle. The Do Yo Thangs are sure to insight outbursts of head bopping, lip pouting, and come “highly recommended”
To begin the day: That Gold Street Sound, a Motown Funk, Rock and Soul band from Melbourne will make you shake your tail feather. It is ‘Devil’s Music’ with heavenly vocals that will make you wanna dance, and put you in the mood for romance. This is Funk, but not the type of Funk where songs and chorus’ take a back seat. It is Motown with a modern twist. It is old fashioned Soul with the influence of Rock and Roll. It is the most fun you can have with your pants on… until you dance your pants off!
Summer of Soul has been the stress-free family friendly music festival since 2002. The spectacular leafy amphitheater of Mossvale Park, between Leongatha and Mirboo North in South Gippsland, near the Gippsland coast, is an open secret for lovers of soulful music who prefer good food, local brews and a relaxed circle of deckchairs to the frenzied multi-stage stampede.
