GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.
Position Purpose
The position of Targeted Care Package - Youth Worker is based in the Extended Community Care team. The position supports young people to improve their wellbeing, feel empowered, build resilience, and increase their independence. The position requires someone who is a positive role model, a mentor, and a strong advocate. The Extended Community Care team operates a 24hr service, the typical hours are 9am – 5:06pm Monday to Friday however there are times where hours will need to be flexible in accordance with young people’s needs.
Key Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Aboriginal culture with the ability to liaise with and support the local Community.
- An understanding of the social and political issues impacting on young people who are experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness.
- Demonstrated capacity to deliver culturally sensitive practices in working with young people.
- A commitment and ability to create strong links with appropriate services and networks and an understanding and knowledge of the available resources in Gippsland.
- An understanding of team responsibilities and dynamics, and the skills required to support and encourage team members.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, be self-motivated and to also work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- An ability to put personal opinions and beliefs to one side and assist clients with their issues and needs, however conflicting they maybe to your own views/opinions, beliefs.
- Knowledge in working with young people, particularly those with complex behaviours.
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).
- Driver licence ESSENTIAL
- Cert IV or above in a qualification related to youth work DESIRABLE
- First Aid cert level 2 (training will be provided if not already qualified ESSENTIAL
- A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
- A person of Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander background DESIRABLE
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
