Live at the Foot of the Mountains, Change Young Lives, and Run a Flying Fox to Work
- Position: Wollangarra Director (Live-in Role)
- Location: Gippsland, Victoria
- Tenure: 2–3 years | Start Date: Flexible
Ready to trade the 9-to-5 grind for misty mornings, campfire stories, and a life that actually means something? Wollangarra is calling for its next Director — or Directors (couples and young families welcome!) — to live and lead on our off-grid slice of paradise in the Victorian High Country.
This isn’t just a job — it’s a way of life. A tough, muddy-boot, wildly rewarding kind of life.
And yes, there’s a literal flying fox to get to work.
🧗♀️ This role is for you if:
You’d rather be in hiking boots than business shoes
- You believe in teenagers more than they believe in themselves
- You’ve fixed a tractor, pitched a tent, and had a deep conversation all in the same day
- You love the challenge of running a community and a property with your bare (sometimes calloused) hands
- You’ve been searching for something real
🧭 What You’ll Do
As Director, you’ll be the heart of Wollangarra — a non-profit outdoor education centre that changes young lives through hands-on conservation, community, and adventure. You’ll lead a passionate team, run programs for teenagers aged 14–18, and help keep the homestead humming and the hills echoing with laughter.
Your role will be as varied as the weather:
- Facilitate epic multi-day hikes and hands-on conservation work
- Train and mentor a team of young leaders (and teach them to reverse trailers like a boss)
- Keep the place ticking: buildings, gear, chickens, vehicles, veggie patch, flying fox – all of it
- Chat with schools, write a killer newsletter, throw a bush dance, maybe bottle some peaches
- Help teens unplug and discover who they are – in the wild, the real wild
🏡 What You’ll Get
Your very own rustic cottage on “Tussocky Flat” with sweeping river views
- All food and utilities provided
- External training in wild skills like swift water rescue, 4WD, chainsaw, wilderness first aid
- A monthly honorarium to help with life's basics
- A chance to truly, deeply make a difference
- And most importantly: a tight-knit, values-driven, mud-covered, laughter-filled community
You’ll wake to the sound of kookaburras, spend your days helping young people reconnect with the natural world, and your evenings stargazing by the fire with a cup of billy tea.
🛠 Who We’re Looking For
Someone with:
- Serious outdoor education chops
- Big heart, steady head, quick wit
- Leadership experience and the ability to wrangle people, plans, and projects
- A love for the land, community spirit, and a dash of wild
You’ll need to live on-site, commit to 2–3 years, and bring some grit (and maybe a good thermos). If you’re a couple or a family, even better — there’s room for everyone in the adventure.
🧡 This is a rare role. It only comes up every few years.
If your heart is thumping and your brain is whispering “do it,” don’t ignore it. Come visit, have a yarn with us, and see what it’s all about.
