GEGAC is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation based in Bairnsdale Victoria. Consisting of about 160 staff, GEGAC is a Not-for-Profit organisation that delivers holistic services in the areas of Primary Health, Social Services, Elders & Disability and Early Childhood Education.
GEGAC advocates for the self-determination of the Aboriginal community by prioritising services that enhance social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, with culture at the heart of everything we do.
Position Purpose
The Cook will support GEGAC in delivering nutritious, culturally appropriate meals to clients, staff, elders in a planned activity group setting and community members. The role involves preparing and cooking meals in line with food policies, ensuring food is prepared in a safe, hygienic, and culturally respectful manner. The Cook will work collaboratively with the team to create meal plans that reflect the dietary needs, preferences, and cultural values of the community.
Key Selection Criteria
· Previous experience in preparing and cooking means in a community or institutional setting (e.g., schools, healthcare, or aged care) preferred.
· Strong knowledge of food safety standards and hygiene practices.
· Experience with maintaining kitchen cleanliness, food storage, and safe food handling procedures.
· Understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and food practices.
· Ability to create culturally appropriate and respectful meals for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
· Strong communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of quality.
· Reliable and punctual with a strong work ethic.
· Ability to stand for extended periods, lift heavy items, and work in a busy kitchen environment.
· Excellent time management and multitasking abilities.
Qualifications and Registrations Requirement (Essential or Desirable).
· Driver licence ESSENTIAL
· Certificate III in Commercial Cookery or equivalent or demonstrated experience in a professional kitchen environment ESSENTIAL
· A current Food Handling or Food Safety Certificate or ability to obtain certification ESSENTIAL
· A satisfactory Working with Children Check and Fit2Work Police Check ESSENTIAL
· A person of Aboriginal / Torres Strait Islander backgroundDESIRABLE
· Proof of COVID-19 vaccinated to align with GEGAC requirements ESSENTIAL
