The real cost of commuting in Gippsland (and how to stop doing it)
Fuel prices in Victoria aren't letting up. And if you're driving from Leongatha to Warragul, Bairnsdale to Sale, or anywhere across the Latrobe Valley every day just to get to work — you're feeling it.
The commute is one of those things regional workers quietly accept. There aren't always jobs on your doorstep, so you drive. But have you actually sat down and worked out what that commute is costing you?
The numbers are confronting
Let's take a straightforward example. Driving from Leongatha to Warragul, or from an outlying town into Traralgon — a 60 to 80km round trip is completely normal across Gippsland. At current fuel prices that adds up to roughly:
$14–$19 a day in fuel
$3,500–$4,700 a year just to get to work and back
250 hours a year — over 6 working weeks — spent behind the wheel
And that's before you factor in tyre wear, servicing, and the extra kilometres chewing through your car's value.
The regional reality
We get it — this isn't about driving to Melbourne. Most Gippsland workers aren't doing that. But the commute from the South Gippsland coast up to Warragul, or from outlying towns into Traralgon or Morwell, adds up just the same.
Regional Victoria has a real challenge. Employment hubs are concentrated in larger centres — Traralgon, Sale, Warragul, Bairnsdale — and if you live outside them, you drive. It's been that way for a long time.
But it's changing. More Gippsland employers are hiring locally, and more of them are listing those roles right here rather than on the big national platforms where local jobs get buried.
Tips to find work closer to home
Calculate your real take-home pay Before you rule out a local job because it pays slightly less, do the maths. Subtract your annual commute costs from your current salary. A local job paying $5,000 less might actually leave you better off — and give you your evenings back.
Set up a local job alert On Gippslander you can set up a job alert for your town or region. When a new role comes up near you, you'll get an email straight away — no need to keep checking.
Look at the full picture Less time in the car means more time at home, less stress, and a better quality of life. For a lot of people in Gippsland that's worth as much as the salary itself.
Talk to local employers directly Some of the best local jobs in Gippsland never make it to the big job sites. Following local businesses on Facebook, or checking their websites directly, can surface roles you'd never otherwise see. Or check their employer profile on Gippslander to see everything they're currently hiring for.
Don't overlook these industries Gippsland has strong local demand across:
These are industries where local employment is genuinely available and commuting is rarely necessary.
Working close to home isn't just about saving money. It's about being present in your community, spending less of your life in a car, and building a career that fits around the life you actually want to live.
Gippsland has more local jobs than most people realise. We're here to help you find them.
