If you want summer work on the Bass Coast, the time to apply is now, not December. Businesses from Phillip Island to Inverloch are building their summer teams over the next few weeks, and the best shifts go to people who get in early.
Every summer the coast fills up. Holiday houses open, caravan parks book out, and cafes, pubs and shops that run quietly through winter suddenly need twice the staff. That means casual and seasonal work for students, parents looking for school hours, retirees and anyone wanting extra cash before Christmas.
Here's who's hiring right now, what the work pays, and how to stand out.
Who's hiring right now
Summer hiring on the coast is already well under way, and most of the new jobs are casual and seasonal. These are the kinds of roles employers are filling right now:
Accommodation: housekeepers, room attendants and reception staff at caravan parks, holiday parks and resorts in Cowes, Phillip Island and Inverloch.
Hospitality: food and beverage attendants, bar staff, kitchen hands and supervisors at clubs, pubs and cafes.
Retail: shop assistants and bottle shop staff in Cowes and Wonthaggi, where supermarkets and stores staff up for the holiday crowds.
Outdoor and seasonal work: gardeners, lawn and property maintenance crews, and removalists as holiday homes get ready for summer.
A few patterns stand out. Accommodation is hiring hard, with caravan parks and resorts after housekeepers and room attendants ahead of the holiday rush. Clubs and pubs want front of house staff. And outdoor work like gardening and removals picks up as holiday homes get readied for summer.
Not looking for seasonal work? There are also permanent roles on the coast right now in nursing, aged care and retail management.
What summer work pays
Most summer roles on the coast advertise between $28 and $34 an hour, based on median advertised pay across Gippsland in the Gippslander salary guide:
Retail and hospitality - $28/hr
Cleaning and housekeeping - $30/hr
Reception and admin - $34/hr
Trades and outdoor work - $40/hr
These are a guide, not award rates. Casual roles usually include a casual loading, and weekend, public holiday and late night penalty rates can lift your pay a lot over Christmas and New Year.
How to land a summer job before Christmas
Apply in November. Many summer jobs close in late November. Once the school holidays start, most rosters are already full.
Lead with your availability. Tell employers exactly which days you can work, and whether you're around for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year. That's often the deciding factor.
Have your basics ready. A short resume, two referees and a phone number you actually answer. For bar and bottle shop roles, an RSA certificate helps.
Look past the obvious towns. Cowes and Inverloch get the most attention, but Wonthaggi, San Remo and Cape Paterson all hire for summer too.
Don't skip housekeeping and outdoor roles. They're often less competitive than cafe jobs, the hours can be more regular, and the pay is often better.
